Part 3 of 1984 describes the torment and torture that Winston is put through after being caught. He has been taken to what he believes is the Ministry of Love to be questioned for his various crimes against the party. There he is pushed and endures a lot of suffering until he finally gives into the party. While there he sees that people here have no reason to fight the party and he also meets up with some of his old friends. He sees O'Brien who would be the one that carries out his torture. He tells Winston the various truths about the party and the future they wish to create.
The way I see it prison in the world is very similar to our prison. Although cruel and unusual punishment is against the law here perhaps it could be happening somewhere in secret. In the story this takes place in the Ministry of Love. A big place with guards and machine gun turrets that stands in the middle of former London. Modern day prisons are usually further from residential areas so it would be hard to tell what actually goes on inside them aside from what people say.
The reader can get a feel for what a society Oceania really is. It makes me wonder about how the Party gained so much power again and gives us an insight of their goal in all of this. It shows that when everything is gone all that you have left is the human spirit but that can only fight for so long. Winston is pitted against his worst fears and wonders how much time left before he finally snaps and gives up.
